I’m planning a birthday party for my husband this year. He’s turning 40, and I want it to be a party to remember. I’m planning on having our closest friends and family over for a really nice dinner party catered by our favorite Italian restaurant with plenty of food, drinks, and some good music for everyone to enjoy. I’ve tinkered with the idea of making this a surprise party, but I think that is going a little too far, plus he would know I was up to something. So I decided it would be best to let him in on the secret and tell him I was planning a party but to keep the big details to myself. I let him select the restaurant we would use to have catered, and of course he got to pick his favorite appetizers, entrees, and got to give me some direction on the flavor of the cake. I want him to have a wonderful birthday, so I wanted to make sure he was getting to make some of the decisions, but not have to mess with any of the details. And the party really is in the details! I’ve been planning a lot of fun ideas to make the house look great and to make sure my husband and all of our guests have a great time. I am kind of known for my party favors that I give out at our gatherings. I really want my guests to leave with a nice token of my appreciation and to have something fun they can remember the evening by. Since we are having our favorite Italian restaurant cater the party at our house, I figured I would run with that theme and serve some really good wine and Italian margaritas for the drinks. Since I was planning on serving some great wine, I decided that the party favors should be custom etched wine glasses. I ordered some red wine glasses that have “Happy 40th Birthday, David” on the glass and “Thank you for celebrating with us” etched around the base of the glass in a spiral. They look really great. I ordered enough glasses for everyone to take one home with them as a party favor. But that is not where the fun stops! I’m going to use the glasses as the container for a little goodie bag of gourmet specialty chocolates. I’ve ordered some really amazing chocolates, and will wrap a variety of chocolate pieces in festive tissue paper, and put cello wrap tied with ribbon around the little package of goodies, and put each wrapped package inside of the custom etched wine glass. I will set all of these on our buffet that is by our door and make sure everyone grabs one when they are leaving. I figure this is a great little party favor because all of our friends love chocolate and red wine. And when I send them home with a nice little wine glass, every time they use the custom etched glass later on, they will be reminded of the wonderful time they had celebrating my wonderful husband’s 40th birthday party!

If you are an adult with a reasonable sense of humor, a group of friends, and a normal social life, you enjoy a nice party. Whether having friends over to your house, going to somebody else’s house, or putting it on at another venue, a party is a great way to cap off the week. Parties are relaxing, enjoyable, and a wonderful place to enjoy your friends. However, the college days are over. Good parties do not just happen, you have to create them. This takes a little bit of work and preparation. When it all comes together, it pays off big with a great time for all.
A good party requires a good location. Your one bedroom apartment is probably not the best place to have 30 people over to. People will be bumping elbows and will not be able to move back and forth and mingle easily. You should have plenty of room for everybody. The larger the party is, the larger the venue should be. During the summer months, if you can have it outside in the evening, all the better. Good weather and night air will put everybody into a better mood, increasing the overall enjoyment factor. You should have plenty of places for people to sit down and plenty of flat surfaces for people so sit their drinks on. The more convenient you make it, the less people have to worry about the little things, and the more enjoyable the party is.
A good party also requires good drinks. Wine is popular with almost everybody. You should offer red and white wines to make sure that you can accommodate everybody’s tastes. The red wine should be served at room temperature and should have had plenty of time to breath. Pouring it into a decanter will do the trick, making sure that the wine is completely oxygenated. The white wine should be chilled before serving. It is much more enjoyable when cold, as all of the flavors come out. You also want to make sure that you have red and white wine glasses for the full effect. The red wine glasses have a wider rim and shallower bowl so that the wine gets as much exposure to oxygen as possible. The white wine glasses have a narrower rim and a deeper bowl to keep the wine cooler longer.
A good party also requires music. Music can set the mood and change the whole tone of a party. If you are trying to have a relaxing get together where people can talk and socialize, you probably should not play heavy metal music. For this kind of party, you should play something mellow. The music should have acoustic instruments and singers with harmonious voices. The volume should be set low enough so that it is a background noise. It should never be loud enough to distract people from their conversations.
Good wine, good music and a space with plenty of room can make all the difference between a good party and a forgettable party. Pay attention to these requirements and your next party will be a smashing success.
