I like to take my dog with me whenever I can. She is a good girl and has been a great companion for many years. Some places and activities have historically been off-limits to dogs because of the difficulty of managing them. It is difficult to take a dog in the car, along on a bike ride, on a plane, or for a boat trip. These activities are made for humans, and all of the accessories involved do not lend themselves to working with dogs. Because of this, a group of engineers using some good-old ingenuity have created a host of products to make it easier for our dogs to accompany us on a wide variety of activities.
Taking the dog for a car ride, whether to the vet or across the country, is never an easy thing to do. Dogs are not made for travelling in a moving vehicle. They do not know how to move with the momentum of the car and their legs are not able to remain stable when the car is moving. This can lead to an injury for the dog or an injury for you if the dog is jumping around in the car unfettered. To solve this problem, a car seat for dogs is available. I use this product regularly and have found that it solves the car problem. The dog sits securely in a basket that is held in place with the seatbelt. This keeps the dog from moving around too much, gives her a great place to sit comfortably, and keeps her in place when the car stops or moves suddenly.
I love riding my bike. I have always felt guilty that I had to leave my dog at home while I was out having fun. Thankfully, this problem has also been solved. Now I can connect a sturdy trailer to the back of my bike and take her along with me. The trailer has two wheels spread far enough apart to keep it as stable as possible while still allowing it to turn smoothly. The trailer is covered with a top that opens to give the dog some air and sunshine or closes to keep her secure.
A few short years ago, taking a dog on a plane was unheard of. Now you can carry small dogs in the cab with you if you have the right accessories. A dog carrier designed for travelling will allow you to carry the dog with you. These carriers are shaped like duffel bags with enough space in the center to hold a small dog. You can secure her by closing the top, let her see out by opening the sides and exposing the mesh screens, or let her stick her head out of the top.
Boating has always been closed to dogs. Dogs can swim, but you do not want them to jump out of the boat in the ocean or the middle of a lake. A dog lifejacket has made it possible to take the dog with you. These life jackets fit snugly around a dog and help her float in the water with her face above the water line.
These products make it possible to take your dog where you could never take her.

After much thought and debate, I finally decided to get a small dog for my family. My children were ecstatic at the mere thought of getting a small dog to play with and care for and I began to concentrate on preparing for and finding a small dog with the personality that would fit my family’s needs. Instead of searching at the local pet stores, I decided adopting a small dog would be a great way to go. Many small dogs and puppies are available for adoption from animal shelters, private owners and various other places. Adopting a small dog is a great alternative to buying an animal from a pet store because you have the chance to save an animal that could possibly be put down.
For anyone looking to adopt a small dog, your local animal shelter is probably the best place to start looking for small dogs available for adoption. You might have multiple shelters in your area, so it’s not a bad idea to check all of them if they aren’t too far apart and see what kinds of dogs they have up for adoption. Lots of animal shelters are usually willing to tell you over the phone what small dogs they have to adopt or have photos posted to their website if they have one and this can save you time. Also, search in your neighborhood for flyers advertising the private sale or adoption of a small dog and check your local classifieds and bulletin boards. These are great resources to find small dogs for adoption if you are unable to afford the fees at the other places, as there are usually a number of ads for free puppies to good homes. Caution must be taken, however, to make sure that the puppies did indeed come from a good home and are not suffering from any major health problems. Online classified ads are also a nice alternative to the paper and follow the same format. If you are having a difficult time finding a small dog for sale or adoption, consider placing an ad of your own somewhere.
I happened to find the perfect small dog for my family at one of the local shelters and we fell in love with her. There was of course an adoption fee to cover the basic medical care that she received. This is standard for most dogs adopted from shelters and usually includes spaying or neutering. Then came the really fun part; dressing and accessorizing our small dog. Dressing a small dog, especially in the winter, is more than merely seeing them strut around in adorable outfits. It is practical too. In harsh winter climates, it is important to keep your latest addition to your family warm. This means investing in small dog coats, sweaters, jackets and dresses. Online stores have a plethora of options that can fit your small dog’s personality, from dog collars to sweatshirts and dresses. Along with clothing for your small dog, things such as beds, harnesses, bowls and grooming tools are essential for your adopted small dog to live a comfortable and happy life with its new family.
